But, we were still having fun! That’s probably because we are not very smart. But, despite all the crap, this is still what we would rather do than most any other thing. Don’t worry, our wives, friends, tobacco companies and bartenders already know where they stand here.  So we cinched up our girdles, streamlined car payments, re-mortgaged, re-financed, drank cheaper beer, smoked generic cancer, cut out in-between snacks …whatever it took… and eventually scraped enough money together to convince Ed Young to let us into his studio again. Our friends at PacificSol agreed to bite the bullet one more time and graciously passed the dynamite to us…… because the fuse was lit.

We brought another guitar player this time. Zeke is a welcome addition to the line-up. He showed-up on the doorstep one day with the requisite hairdo and attitude… as Jeff says in “Hungover Again”… ‘How could I refuse?’. Actually he’s a life-long friend with the same creepy dreams as us… another other brother from another different mother. He wails. He rips. He knows when to play and when not to. He makes it easy for me. We think we’ll keep him.

We also brought back some of our old friends from the last CD as well as some new friends that will always have a musical place to live as long as I’m alive. Tony Perrino just plain kills the B-3 for us in several cuts on this project. Thanks, Tony! Our old friend Bobby Howard tickles the keys and satisfies our ‘Blues Jones’ in “Waitin’ Such Awhile”. The prodigious Ed Young contributes some backing guitar on “Sad But True” that helps put that one over the top. Our old buddy Paul Campbell threw his tonsils into some backgrounds and we are proud to have him on this CD. As for the new folks, we got some frenzied violin work out of Craig Thaler on a few tunes that really added just the substance we were looking for. This guy doesn’t just play violin, he plays Maynard Brothers style violin! I expect some history of psychotherapy in this boy’s past. He is Nasty. And, we were also lucky enough to meet Erin Harkes. And she was kind enough to help us out with some vocal tracks. And if you don’t get goose-bumps when you hear her sing on “Ludmilla’s Wedding”, check your pulse and call the morgue, you’re dead.

We had enough material already lying around to make a second CD, and my Muse was kind enough to drop by some new stuff as the sessions went on. Consequently, we have music that has been aged for 15 years and some tunes that were puked-up days or hours before we hit the studio. For instance, “A song For Allison” speaks of a child waiting to go to kindergarten. That real-life little girl has since grown up and is currently attending college! On the other end of that spectrum, “Don’t Mind Livin’ Alone” was one that practically got written on the drive to Ed’s ‘House of Recording Bliss’. Go figure.

Anyway, it’s been another great ride on the MBB express. I’m proud of what we achieved here. Compared to MBB One, I think the songs are richer and more mature. I think both the individual and combined playing is better overall, and the addition and resulting contributions of the fine musicians that helped us out make for a more balanced and professional effort. It was great fun making this CD. I love the musical aroma emanating from our little musical gift to you ….. this “Nasty Package”.

The Maynard Brothers Band hopes you enjoy it!

Here’s a quick synopsis of  the Maynard Brothers Band’s newest CD “Nasty Packages”, …… package by nasty package:

“Don’t Mind Livin’ Alone” - Guy has life. Guy likes life. Guy meets girl. Guy does not need girl to change guy’s life.

“Some Days You Burn” - People. I’m shaking my head here. They create and maintain relationships that are selfish, subversive, submissive or self-defeating. My belief is that Instant Karma will get you (eventually) for acting wrong and treating each other like crap. Sometimes a train is more than just a big machine on rails.

“Nasty Packages” - For the creep in everybody. This feller may have carried his revenge plan a little too far. My mind must be like the truck stop bathroom in this song: “Somebody left ... something ... in there.”

“Sad But True” - Oh, NOW I know what the problem is … YOU suck! Get out of my life!

“Waitin’ Such Awhile” - Any guy ruminating in any bar. Getting older and still no clue of what the hell is going on. When is it going to be MY turn?

“Ludmilla’s Wedding” - My ‘anti-war’ song. My ‘love gone wrong’ song. My ‘Why the heck does it end like THAT?’ song. People. I’m shaking my head here again.

“Waitin’ On A Bone” - Middle class, hard working, tax paying, all American blues for ‘Joe Anybody’. I do my part. YOU do YOUR part, you sunovabitch!

“Leave Me With Something, Baby” - Occasionally, they get away alive…and take everything with them too.

“Drifting Back” - Jimi Hendrix meets the Black Crowes at an Allman Brother’s tribute party for Lynyrd Skynyrd  where they all get together and perform a melancholy tune about recapturing lost youthful dreams.

“A Song For Allison” - A day in the life of a working Mom. Compassion and observations from The MBB….who’d a thunk it?
