"Shake The Nation"
Reviewer - Paul Rapp
Out of Control hits
hard with their second CD. The record simply explodes with hard grooves, blues-drenched songs, hot emotions and impeccable
playing. .....This record captures OOC as the whip-cracking band
everybody's seen, thanks in no small part to the production of the
legendary Eddie Kramer, who has produced such folks as Hendrix, Led
Zepplin, and Santana. Needless to say, the production is clean, lively and
big-league. That's not to say this album is style over substance. It would
jump if it had been recorded on a Norelco dictaphone. The rhythm section
of Greg Piekarz (bass), Joe Rocco (drums) and the ubiquitous Brian Melick
(utensils) is just unremittingly in the pocket and funky. The big
four-piece horn section recalls not only Tower of Power but such virtuoso
outfits as the latter-day Stan Kenton and Woody Herman bands, with a nice
dose of Chase-like blare. And, of course, there is the eminently tasteful
and at times breathtaking guitar playing of his royal studliness, Denny
Dwyer, and the down-home classic B-3 organ howling of the Hon. Chris
Cernik.

"In A Funk
- Tower of Power & Out
of Control"
Reviewer - Paul Rapp
Local dude-men Out of
Control had a lot of cajones to open the show, and if they were nervous,
it sure didn't show. The band has undergone some changes and done some
serious work over the past year, and it shows, and it's all for the
better. The spotlight is now on guitarist-singer Denny Dwyer, a brilliant
blues guitarist, a great singer, and it must be noted, a fine-looking
fellow. The beefed-up horn and rhythm sections absolutely crank, Chris
Cernik plays the B-3 like Booker T., and Brian Melick adds spicy exotica
with his expert whacking of stuff. The songs and arrangements are right
there, and like TOP, these guys clearly have fun at what they do, and it's
infectious. It may come as a shock if you haven't seen Out of Control in a
while, but they are absolutely in the same league as Tower of Power, and
that's saying something.

"The world-class
groove machine known as Out of Control has recently released Shake The Nation (BlueWorld Records), their latest album of
brassy, sweat inducing, dance floor invitations. Propelled by a tight
rhythm section, meaty guitar, and inventive horn charts, the 9-piece OOC
covers urban soul territory seamlessly and delivers a sonic punch in all
the right places. While the Tower of Power comparison is inevitable and
justified, and hints of '80's Santana (the charging "Inside These
Walls") and Little Feat (the pulsating "Cardiac Party") are
apparent, don't dare write these guys off as mere imitators. Principal
writer and lead vocalist Rick Rourke gives a rousing performance on his
own strutting "Mr. Shoes", and he and guitarist/vocalist Denny
Dwyer smolder on the blues ballad "Ever Since The Day". The
whole band gets down and has a blast with Johnny "Guitar"
Watson's "You Can Stay But That Noise Got To Go". And there's
plenty more. Original, high-energy abounds on "Shake The
Nation", so (I can't help stating the obvious) get Out of
Control!"
